What’s in 5-ingredient chicken noodle soup?

This is a simple, basic soup made with simple ingredients!

Ingredient for chicken noodle soup
  • Chicken Broth: You can use either regular chicken broth for this, or use water + chicken bouillon cubes.
  • Chicken: Leftover cooked chicken works best. I tend to either use a shredded rotisserie chicken, or a can of pre-cooked chicken.
  • Carrots: Frozen or canned carrots work great here. You can use fresh carrots too — they just take longer to soften.
  • Egg Noodles: The best type of noodles for classic chicken noodle soup is egg noodles. You can use just about any type of paste, though!
  • Seasoned Salt: This adds a little extra flavor. If you’re sensitive to salt, you can leave this out.

Cooking the soup
In a large pot, combine the chicken broth, chicken, carrots, egg noodles, and seasoned salt. Bring the soup to a boil, then cover and reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 10-15 minutes.

Serve yourself a big bowl of soup! This pairs well with your favorite toppings: crusty bread or a few crackers to crumble in!

Variations

  • Crockpot Chicken Noodle Soup: Just toss everything in the slow cooker and let it cook for 3-4 hours on high or 6-8 hours on low. You can even use boneless skinless chicken breasts or boneless chicken thighs in place of cooked chicken. Just be sure to remove the chicken pieces and shred them before serving!
  • Chicken and Rice Soup: You can replace the noodles with rice — I love adding wild rice!
  • Extra Ingredients: You can add several additional ingredients to the base recipe, including other vegetables like celery, green beans, or green onion, Italian seasoning, a dried bay leaf, or fresh herbs.
  • Freezer Meal: Place all the ingredients in a freezer bag. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then pour into a soup pot and heat! Alternately, you can cook the soup, allow it to cool, then place individual portions in freezer-safe containers or freezer bags. Microwave to reheat!
