What’s in this 2-ingredient flatbread recipe?
There’s only 2 simple ingredients in this easy recipe:
- Self-Rising Flour: This is the secret to achieving the perfect texture in your fluffy flatbreads. Self-rising flour, a blend of all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt, makes it easy to get a soft, tender dough with just one measurement. The pre-mixed leavening agent help create the ideal rise and texture without any extra fuss. If you’d like to make your own self-rising flour at home, King Arthur Baking offers a fantastic recipe to try.
- Greek Yogurt:Greek yogurt gives you the soft flatbread texture with the added benefit of tons of protein! You can sub sour cream, regular yogurt, or even coconut cream for the greek yogurt.
Making homemade flatbread
Step 1 | Make the Dough
In a large bowl, combine your self-raising flour and yogurt. Mix until you get a shaggy dough like this:
Then, turn your dough out onto a lightly floured surface. You can use more self rising flour for this, or flour your surface with regular flour. Knead until you get an elastic and smooth dough.
Step 2 | Roll It Out
Next, split your dough ball in half, then split each piece of dough into thirds. This should give you 6 large flatbreads. If you’d like smaller flatbreads, you can split the dough into smaller pieces.
Roll each piece out to about 1/4″ thickness or thinner. Cover rolled dough with a tea towel or some plastic wrap to keep it from drying out while it waits its turn to be cooked!
Step 3 | Cook It
Preheat a non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Do NOT add any oil — you want a dry pan for this step. Place the flatbread in the pan and allow it to cook. It’s time to flip the bread when you see bubbles on the non-cooking side.
Cook each side until it’s covered with golden brown spots. Remove your flatbread from the pan and place it on a plate, then cover the plate to keep the bread warm. Continue cooking until all of your delicious flatbread is done!
Step 4 | Enjoy!
You can enjoy your flatbread in a number of ways. If you want to serve it as a side, you can drizzle it with a little olive oil and add some chopped herbs!
Ideas for Using Healthy Flatbread
While this is certainly not an authentic or traditional recipe for pita bread, tortillas, or naan, you can use your flatbread in place of all of these. It’s a great base for a number of different recipes!
- As a tortilla: Serve your warm flatbread with all the taco or burrito fixings! Mexican food with a healthy dose of protein is a fantastic combination.
- As a naan: You can serve this alongside curries and other Indian food for a low carb, higher protein option than store-bought naan.
- As a wrap/pita: Add your favorite sandwich fixings to the center, then wrap your flatbread and enjoy!
- As pizza crust: Top your flatbread with your favorite pizza toppings, then broil for a few minutes to melt the cheese. This makes a delicious flatbread pizza!
